Choose it if the additional 12 inches lets your actual equipment fit without compromising the walkway. It is the same nominal depth as the 36-inch option.
What the research says
The direct listing identifies the 48-inch charcoal/charcoal configuration. Tom’s Guide tested a 48 × 24 Duo, but its older 47.8-inch maximum differs from Branch’s current 47.3-inch specification; we use the current manufacturer range.
Test the room with a 40-inch alcove example
A 48-inch-wide top cannot fit inside a 40-inch-wide opening. A 36-inch top leaves 4 inches of total nominal width, before accounting for obstructions. This arithmetic does not establish safe operating clearance.
Measure the base and feet as well as the top, baseboards, nearby furniture, sockets and the moving cable path. Follow the exact assembly and operating instructions. Collision detection is not permission to trap cables or move a desk beneath an obstruction.
Lay out the equipment before buying more width
Mark a 36 × 24 rectangle on a clear surface, then place your actual keyboard, mouse, laptop and screen stand within it. Repeat at 48 × 24. Check viewing space and the chair’s movement into the walkway; do not assume that a nominal monitor count proves fit.
The larger top has 288 more square inches of nominal rectangular area, but rounded corners and the rear notch reduce the usable surface. A monitor arm needs suitable clamping space and room to move behind the desk. We have not verified a universal arm clearance or maximum screen layout for either configuration.
Check sitting height as carefully as standing height
Measure the keyboard surface you actually need in both positions and compare it with the current 28–47.3-inch manufacturer range. If your seated surface needs to be lower than 28 inches, neither of these published configurations meets that requirement by itself.
An accessory tray, different chair setup or different desk changes the fit question. Do not assume an add-on is included or automatically solves it. The older independent review’s height figure is not used to promise additional current lift range.

Before buying
Is 36 inches the smallest standing desk available?
This comparison does not establish a market minimum. It covers two verified sizes of one model. Compare another product if your opening or working-height needs rule out both.
Which is more stable?
We have not measured stability or tested both sizes under the same equipment load. A published lift-capacity figure or the independent 48-inch review does not establish a stability winner between configurations.
Can either hold two monitors?
That depends on your actual displays, stands or arms, top compatibility and layout. Measure the equipment and its movement instead of relying on a universal minimum desk width.
